The reason for the difference between the Spanish billion and the English billion is simple. A thousand is a long word in English, so saying “a thousand million” is awkward. But in Spanish is a short word, “mil”, so saying “mil millones” is easy. The solution to avoid confusion is to use scientific notation: 10^9 and 10^12.
